ABSTRACT:
Given that you picked up this document, it is likely that you are trying to determine if your company can benefit from high availability. Or perhaps you believe your company would benefit from HA, but think solutions are either too expensive, too complex, or too time consuming to operate (or all of the above). It could also be that you are frustrated with your current HA software and are looking for an alternative. Regardless, lets look at and dispel the more common myths surrounding iSeries high availability:

  • Only larger enterprises can afford the total cost of ownership of high availability software.
  • A dedicated person is usually required to monitor and manage high availability software
  • The high availability role-swap process (switchover) is typically cumbersome, and often unreliable
  • No real difference exists between the two methods of HA data replication: remote journaling and proprietary harvest-and-send
  • The longer a high availability vendor has been in business, the more functional and reliable it is
  • High availability software only benefits companies that have a second iSeries (or plan to obtain one)
