ABSTRACT:

Wikipedia.org receives between 25,000 and 60,000 page requests per second, depending on the time of day. In order to support increasing demand, the Wikimedia Foundation needs a highly available, scalable, secure environment that can expand the server and storage infrastructure to host growing rich media content. The infrastructure must have a simple management system that supports data integrity and reliable backups, and can serve large multimedia files up to 100 MB in size while maintaining a positive user experience.

To address growth concerns, Wikimedia supplemented its existing Linux clusters with an affordable, high-performance, scalable solution based on Sun Fire™ X4150 and X4240 servers running Ubuntu Server, MySQL™ database, and Sun Fire X4540 servers running the Solaris™ 10 Operating System (Solaris OS) with the Solaris ZFS™ file system.

Highlights:

  • Wikimedia uses Sun Fire servers to provide access to its Wikimedia Commons multimedia repository.
  • MySQL database and Solaris ZFS file system store and protect valuable rich media assets in a large storage infrastructure that is maintained with ease.
  • Sun Fire X4540 servers provide the massive compute processing and data capacity needed to house and manipulate expanding data volumes.
  • Reverse proxy servers, fast Web servers, and replication techniques help ensure fast response times.
